The painting “sweet things” is an oil on canvas. It is a painting of a gleaming mason jar with a honey dipper placed on top. The honey dipper oozes honey onto the lid on the right whose shiny surface reflects the jar of golden syrup on the opposite side. I used a warm color palette consisting of browns, red-oranges and yellow to capture the essence of the honey. The light passes through the jar on the left and then disperses on the right side as a golden-yellow hue. I painted this piece using my own reference photos and materials found in my kitchen. I painted this painting after seriously deciding to commit to my craft. My goal was to capture the details in the jar in as much detail as possible.

In making this piece, I hope to cast an ordinary item in a new light. I was thinking about how I hardly ever noticed mason jars and didn’t realize how sparkly they are until I started searching through my kitchen for something to paint. After pouring honey in the jar I realized how beautiful the syrup looked as light passed through. I hope that the viewers learn to savor each moment and not take all the small, beautiful things in our world for granted
